Hamilton school board opens carpentry program to get students into trades

The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB) has teamed up with the local carpenters’ union to launch a new program that will support students interested in the trades.
The initiative currently has 10 students enrolled, and teaches curriculum that includes dry wall techniques and mini scaffold building.
Union representative Louise Stallings-Owens says this carpentry program has been a long time coming.
“[This program] is a new partnership pilot program with us and the HWCDSB, we’re really excited, its something that’s been in the works for some time,” she said.
The chair of the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic board, Patrick Daly, says it’s a priority to provide opportunities for all students.
“It’s a really big priority for our board to promote young people to at least to consider a future in the skilled trades and really this is the fruit of that good work,” Daly said.
