St. John Henry Newman Catholic Secondary School began because of an awkward 200 student satellite campus at St. Francis Xavier Elementary School. Since this was not a feasible situation, the Board opted to open a new Catholic high school in the East Hamilton/Stoney Creek area. The school, then called Cardinal Newman, opened in September of 1975 with 275 students at 30 Cromwell Cresecent. As the geographical area around Cardinal Newman developed from rural to urban, its student population began to grow, and by 1989 the school had expanded to an amazing 1500 students. A great number of these students were "housed" in portables, to accommodate the growing population.

At this time it was decided that Newman would become a split campus and Cardinal Newman East Campus took over the building previously owned by Winona High while the school on Cromwell Crescent became Cardinal Newman West Campus. Although it was a school that was physically divided, it was united by school Masses, assemblies, athletics, and by the staff and students. For 10 long years staff and students struggled to commute between campuses on their lunch hours and after school. Finally, in 1998 it was announced that the old Saltfleet High School on Gray Road would be demolished and a new Cardinal Newman CSS would be built.

On January 10, 2000, Newman staff and students celebrated the end of 25 years of crowding, commuting, and separation and prepared for and celebrated its new unification. Both campuses and all 1500 students were now together in a new, beautiful building boasting three gyms, a state-of-the-art information centre linked to the Hamilton Public Library, a weight room, a video studio, three auto bays, a cafetorium and more!canonization

Since moving in to the new building on Gray Road, Newman has experienced further growth in its student enrolment. It has an active student community that is rooted in its Catholic faith and this, partnered with the dedication of its staff, parents, and school community, makes Cardinal Newman an excellent place to receive a quality, Catholic education.

Our patron saint was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on September 19, 2010 and canonised by Pope Francis on October 13, 2019.

As a result, our school was proudly renamed St. John Henry Newman Catholic Secondary School at a school blessing and re-dedication liturgy in 2019.

John Henry Newman, after whom our school is named, was born the son of a private banker, in London, in 1801. The Newman's second home, a fine Georgian one, still stands, outside of London by the Thames at Ham. Newman's mother, a member of the Fourdrinier family, was of French Huguenot descent.

John was the eldest of six children, three boys and three girls, and his first fifteen years were spent with the love and care of a happy and united family. His parents encouraged literature, music and amateur theatricals at home. His religion consisted of frequent Bible readings rather than rites or creeds. Although he had been taught the Anglican catechism, Newman, as a boy, had formed "no religious convictions".

Newman admits to a series of conversions in his life which eventually led him to believe in the truth of Catholic doctrine.

Newman sought the truth through obedience to God and he suffered for it. The serenity which underlies all his writings witnesses to the fact that he had found it.

Newman discovered that the truth remains hidden unless sought after. He teaches us that it is to be sought not only with the mind, but also with the heart, and by means of that holiness which allows us to perceive God in our world.john henry pic 2

It was not until long after his death that the Church, through the Second Vatican Council in the 1960's, brought forward the things which Newman fought for: the supremacy of conscience, the Church as communion, a return to scripture and early Christian writings, the rightful way of the laity in the church, work for unity, and efforts to meet the needs of the age.

Each of us who has prayed from the heart has only to look at our prayer to see what we believe. The following prayer written by Newman, not only shows us what he believed, but gives direction to our own search for the truth.

"God has created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have a mission. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for nothing. I shall do good. I shall do his work. I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place while not intending it if I do but keep His word. Therefore I will trust Him. Whatever, wherever I am, I can never be thrown away. If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him. If I am in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him. If I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him. He does nothing in vain. He knows what He is about."
