St. John Henry Newman is offering a second semester Dual Credit course in partnership with Mohawk College focused on Automotive and Technology Studies. This hands-on program allows students to earn both a high school and college credit while gaining real-world experience in the skilled trades.

The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) is a province-wide assessment that measures students’ reading and writing skills — essential for both academic achievement and future success. Successful completion of the OSSLT is a graduation requirement for all Ontario students.

Our school is enhancing eLearning by promoting face-to-face check-ins, collaboration with support staff, and proactive communication with parents to strengthen student success. 💻✨ Teachers are also creating engaging, visually dynamic courses that highlight their personality and make online learning more connected, organized, and fun. 🎨🤝

Newman students are invited to take part in Speak Up and Shine 2025 🌟—a youth leadership event hosted by YWCA Hamilton that empowers young women and gender-diverse students through connection, leadership, and community building. 💬✨ The event takes place on November 19, 2025, at Liuna Station, with transportation and lunch provided—interested students should speak with their social worker, student success teacher for details.

The Newman Health & Wellness Council and Peer Mentors are leading our annual Socktober campaign to collect new socks for individuals experiencing homelessness in Hamilton. Period 1 classes are gathering donations throughout October, with all socks going to local shelters and the top contributing class earning a donut party.

The HWCDSB and Local 18 UBC are partnering again for the locally enhanced carpentry program, offering students a valuable opportunity to earn credits and gain hands-on experience through a paid co-op in the carpentry field. This one-year program is ideal for Grade 12 or 12+ students and includes classroom instruction in English, Math, and Construction, followed by a paid co-op placement with Local 18.

St. John Henry Newman’s Christmas Bazaar is back on Thursday, November 13, 2025, from 4–8 p.m. in the school cafeteria, featuring photos with Santa, hot chocolate, treats, door prizes, and unique gifts from local vendors. Parents and guardians of students with medical conditions such as Diabetes, Asthma, Anaphylaxis, or Epilepsy are asked to complete and return the required medical forms annually to the main office to ensure the school has up-to-date information and appropriate care plans. If a child takes the school bus, families must also submit a transportation emergency action plan, and any questions can be directed to the school’s administrative team.

The St. John Henry Newman Catholic Secondary School T. Litzen Online Store is now open for spirit wear orders until Friday, September 5, 2025, at 11:59 PM (EDT). Orders will be available for pick-up during the in-person sale on September 9 and 10 from 6–8 PM in the SJHN cafeteria.

Newman has proudly earned Gold status once again in the 2024/2025 OPHEA Healthy Schools Certification, celebrating the outstanding efforts of over 100 students in the Health and Wellness and Peer Mentor groups. For the first time in history, both St. John Henry Newman and Bishop Ryan have qualified in the same year for the OFSAA AAA boys' soccer championship after winning their GHAC semifinals. The two Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic rivals will face off for the GHAC title, with seeding for the provincial tournament on the line.

The SJHN United As One Diversity Team is excited to bring back Culture Day on Thursday, May 15th! This event celebrates the rich diversity of our school, and we encourage all students to wear their Cultural Attire to proudly showcase their heritage.
